A friend told me that during the hot summer of 1976 he worked in a Scotch pie factory. It was an unpleasant experience: both his working there and my hearing about it. I’ve seldom ventured within a yard of this comestible, although I’ve speculated on its composition. And I still don’t know all of the ingredients comprising a Scotch pie, because by the time my friend had listed the first few, I’d backed into a corner with my hands over my ears. To paraphrase, the amendment says that the State acknowledges the right to life of the unborn with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother.

Back in 2001, a Scottish Nationalist Party MSP challenged the Holyrood Parliament to permit the use of Scots words in written parliamentary questions and answers. After all, the argument ran, what was wrong with “drookit” instead of “wet”, for example, since everyone knew what was meant? What was wrong, in my view, was that it reduced the Scottish Parliament to a pinstriped version of The Broons, and should be avoided.
