New wound management guidelines

The HSE has launched new national guidelines for wound management.
The guidelines are designed to support the standardisation of care and encourage best clinical practice, and constitute a general guide to be followed, subject to the medical practitioners judgement in each individual case.
Studies in the UK indicate that up to four per cent of total healthcare expenditure is spent on the provision of wound management while in Ireland it is estimated that two-thirds of community nursing time is spent on the provision of wound management, the HSE said.
The guidelines are available on www.hse.ie.
Meanwhile, the Executive last week welcomed The Lancet’s retraction of the controversial and now discredited 1998 paper by Dr Andrew Wakefield, which suggested a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. The journal made the full retraction last week following a ruling by the UK General Medical Council that Dr Wakefield had acted “dishonestly and irresponsibly” in doing his research”.
The Executive said it hoped the news would mean an increase in MMR vaccine uptake, particularly given the current measles outbreak the country is experiencing.
