The acute services reconfiguration plan for the HSE South will be completed in the coming weeks, according to the Executive.

A newsletter for staff in the area revealed that most of the subgroup reports of the reconfiguration team have been submitted and their findings have been discussed with the director of reconfiguration, Cork University Hospital consultant Prof John Higgins.

The outputs of the subgroup reports and discussions will form the basis of the reconfiguration plan, the newsletter stated.

“Already it is clear that we must have certain key enabling changes in place before we can safely move services to different locations,” according to the newsletter.

These changes include rapid image transfer; a single patient information system accessible by computer; a patient identifier to link patient information from Mercy University Hospital, South Infirmary Victoria Hospital and the HSE hospitals in the region; medical admission and assessment units and clarity on how diagnostics will support planned initiatives.

Following the completion of the plan, subgroups will begin detailed work on its implementation of the recommendations.
